P/Town cop first schools Super Sixes
The 2004 PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League’s opened on Tuesday at the St Mary’s College Grounds, Serpentine Road, Port-of-Spain, with a parade of teams. This preceded a five-over Super Sixes tournament which revived the competitive spirit among the participating championship schools and girls zonal teams. Princes Town Senior Secondary were crowned the first ever Super Sixes champs after they restricted Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive to 49 runs in their allotted five overs. They sped to the target up in just 15 balls in the final. The Girls North Zone team rattled up 35 runs, losing only one wicket in the process, to beat the North East outfit who also recorded 35 runs but dropped five wickets.
North Zone was named “Most Disciplined Zone” among the girls while Barrackpore received the honours for the boys. Timothy Surujbally took the “Most Valuable Player” award and the prize for the “Most Runs” as he helped Princes Town to the win. Candice Headley of the North Zone team was named “MVP” among the girls while Candice La Borde hit the “Most Runs.” PowerGen’s General Manager Leo Martin expressed pleasure at his company’s involvement in the league for the eighth year and complimented the league’s governance on their running of the annual competition. Martin said that PowerGen was satisfied with the growing interest of the national community in the discipline. Also present on Tuesday was Dr Roy Austin, American Ambassador in Port-of-Spain who symbolically bowled the first ball to start the day’s activities. The 2004 Championship division bowls off on Tuesday, January 20 at a venue to be announced.
