42 b-ball kids for US tourney

A GROUP of 42 aspiring basketballers, girls and boys, between ages seven and 19, will travel to the United States for an Easter tournament in Durham, North Carolina. But much will depend on the success of a fundraising “Slam Jam All Inclusive Party” being put on by the Millennium Basketball Academy. The fete takes place at La Joya on January 25, and will feature music by Surface and Tony Prescott, Denise “Saucy Wow” Belfon, ex-Calypso Monarch Shadow and Production Sounds. Cost of the party which begins at 4 pm and ends at midnight, is $200. Technical director Lenny Guy and assistant Albert Lee Young are appealing for support for the youngsters, who apart from their participation at the tournament arranged by ex-Duke and Dallas Mavericks point guard Phil Henderson, will be given the opportunity to visit the famed Duke University, and meet the technical staff at a lecture.

And the young basketball aspirants will also see, up close, an NBA game between Washington Wizards and New Orleans Hornets later meet players like Larry Hughes, Baron Davis, David Wesley and Kwame Brown. They are also scheduled to make siteseeing tours of Capitol Hill in Washington DC and North Carolina University, which Michael Jordan attended. Tentative date for departure of the selected 42 youngsters is April. Tickets for the party are available at Rhyners, Port of Spain; Crosby’s, St James and La Joya.
