Odumbe slams 207 in Kenya’s 564
THE VALLEY: Replying to Kenya’s first innings of 564 all out, the Leeward Islands reached 167 for the loss of two wickets yesterday in their second-round Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at Anguilla’s Ronald Webster Park. A second-wicket stand of 91 by vice captain Alex Adams and Sylvester Joseph helped the Leewards make headway yesterday. They resume today with eight wickets standing and 397 runs to make up to match Kenya’s mammoth total. Adams made 90 with 12 fours before he was well caught at wide mid-on by Peter Ongongo off Francis Otieno, and Sylvester Joseph was unbeaten on 37 at yesterday’s close.
The Leewards started their innings just before tea, racing to 62 without loss with openers Shane Jeffers and Adams. Jeffers made 28, capitalising on anything short or pitched up by the Kenyan opening bowlers. Lameck Onyango conceding 46 off his first five overs. Adams struck three consecutive fours in one over. Jeffers went soon after the break, well caught by Otienno at forward short leg off Peter Obuya. Earlier, Maurice Odumbe, who was 74 overnight, plundered 24 fours and two sixes and batted for 302 minutes before he was last man out for 207 for the Kenyans. Odumbe’s innings is now the highest individual score at the Ronald Webster Park, beating the 195 made by Leewards captain Stuart Williams against Jamaica in 2002. The Kenyans resumed the second day at 360 for three.
