ASNL queens D/Force start winning
ALL SECTORS Netball League queens Defence Force destroyed Fire 52-37 to make a winning start to their 2004 campaign in the Championship Division at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex.
The Fire women found goal-shoot Diana Pierre too hot to handle in Saturday’s game, and goal-attack Lystra “Twinkletoes” Zamore, making a return after a season lay-off was deadly accurate. Pierre scored 42 goals from her 46 attempts while Zamore had 10 of 11 for the Army-Coast Guard women. Goal-shoot Merlicia Lovell netted 12 of 23 and Simone Morgan 25 of 39 for the Fire women. Defence Force led 10-9 at the end of the opening quarter but turned their one-goal lead into 11 at the half-time interval - 27-16, and they stretched their advantage even further in the third period - 40-25. Police also made a sound start in the same division, whipping CFC 60-50 behind 29 goals from 50 attempts from Allison Matthews, and 21 of 26 by Donna Elise Charles. The Policewomen led 18-9, 33-22 and 49-36 at the end of the intervals.
In Alternative Division X action, Melissa Roberts scored 24 goals from 34 attempts, Monica Gittens three of three and Kadee Joseph three of nine for CCC to dump Cavaliers 30-18. Melissa Simmons eight, Nadine Williams eight and Onika Felix two scored goals for the losing team. But Police had to scrap to overcome Bermudez 48-41 in the other game in this division. The opening quarter ended 12-12, but Police edged ahead 25-22 at halt-time and were still three-point leaders at three quarters. Gurshier Grand netted 43 goals from 49 attempts and Shavone Skeete five of nine for Police, while Julie Britto scored 25 of 31, Cheryl Ann Warren got 15 of 31 and Hillary Noel one of three for the “Crix Girls.”
Central Bank stopped TSTT 42-29 in their Alternative Division Y game with Kathy James scoring 33 of 53 attempts, Susan Squires seven of 15 and Camille Aubin two of three. Jumila Wilson had 16 goals and Sarah Hutchinson 13 for the “Hello Girls.” Government Printery held off Holiday Snacks 44-40 in the other game in the same division with Margaret Jack scoring 28 of 43 attempts and Cathy Ann Cain 16 of 22. Helen Curden shot 33 of 40 and Marcia Daniel seven of 11 for the Snacks.
