Excel Composite send out b-ball warning
Excel Composite sent a warning through the Under-15 division of the North Zone of the Secondary Schools Basketball League yesterday when they limited Trinity College’s scoring and went on a fast break spree to win 1-18 on the St. Mary’s College basketball court. Trinity were only allowed two baskets a quarter throughout the encounter with only one exception in the final chapter when they made a futile thrust for the win. Excel’s Marcus Alert was the main cause of bother in their attack.
Alert, aside from contributing 20 points to the winning tally aided Hashim Artia as he raced downcourt to score a match-high 32 points. Trinity’s Nigel Lewis tried to bring some honour in defeat to his team but his 13 points could not soften the blow or salvage a win. The St Mary’s College/Belmont Secondary encounter had to be abandoned due to heavy mid-afternoon rains and was left incomplete. The remaining match time will be played on Saturday at a venue to be announced. While Excel had a cool evening stroll, the Queen’s Royal College Under-15 basketballers had to eke a close 43-41 win out of their encounter with the International School of Port-of-Spain (ISPOS) at the school’s basketball court. With home advantage, the ISPOS outfit was not about to lay down against QRC in front of their supporters. Instead the match went down to the wire only for the efforts of Luther Wilson of ISPOS, who topscored, and his team-mates to come to nought.
QRC’s Kofi Trim with a team high 21 points and Keron Deleron, who recorded a supportive 11 points made upset sure and started their team’s season off on a steady footing. The fixture was a result of two other teams, Diego Martin Junior Secondary and Diego Martin Secondary, not showing up for their on court appointments. Morvant/Laventille Secondary School play Holy Name Convent at 2 pm today while Diego Martin Government Secondary take on Diego Martin Junior Secondary at 3 pm. Both matches are Girls Under-15 encounters to be played at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.
