Mucurapo n-ballers on course for rematch

MUCURAPO Senior Comprehensive and sister school Mucurapo Junior Secondary are on course for a rematch in this year’s British Gas Secondary Schools Netball League. Defending national champs Mucurapo Senior (North) had little difficulty in disposing of South West queens Fyzabad Composite 28-13 in Group B action at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex on Wednesday. But Mucurapo Junior (North) scraped past South West runners-up Cedros Composite 21-19 in their Group A game.

Goal-shoot Afeisha Noel slotted in 24 goals from 30 attempts and Akeisha Mark had four of nine for the Mucurapo Senior girls who led 7-2; 14-6; 20-12 at the quarter breaks.  Genniel Quashie had six goals and Candy Collins seven for Fyzo. Cedros held last year’s runners-up Mucurapo Junior 4-4 at the end of the opening quarter, and slipped behind 9-8 at halftime. The girls from deep South put in a stirring effort to knot up the scores 15-15 at the end of the three-quarter stage, but Mucurapo Junior inched to victory in the final stanza with national under-17 goal-attack Nariba Grant leading the way with 15 goals from 19 attempts and Annuola Camejo six of 19.  Karen Phillips knocked in 14 goals from 19 attempts and Giselle Noel five from 11 for Cedros.

Success/Laventille Composite (North) turned back a spirited Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive (South East) 21-15 in the other Group A game. After being held 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, the Pleasantville girls outscored their rivals 6-4 in the second, but still trailed 10-7 and were 15-12 adrift at the end of the third period. Goal-attack Ghaaliya O’Brien had 13 goals from 20 attempts and Teneisha Price eight from 16 for Success/Laventille, while Curleen Procope eight of 14 and Elisha Bass seven of 10 for Pleasantville. Diego Martin Junior Secondary (North) kept their hopes alive in Group B with a 23-12 victory over San Fernando East Junior Secondary (South East). The Diego girls led all the way 6-3; 12-5; 17-7 at the quarter stages with Alisha McDowell scoring 19 of 29 attempts and Anika Borel four of 11.  Nika Fiddler got 11 of 17 and Ramona Noel one of six for the Sando girls.
