Young Perkins (117) sparks Wanderers
Former Trinidad and Tobago Under-15 opener William Perkins blasted an attractive 117 to spark W-Connection Wanderers to a massive 226-run victory over Green Arrow Sports Club in their Carib Sunday League Group “B” Fifth round match at Gilbert Park, Brechin Castle on Sunday.
Perkins smashed one six and 15 delightful fours as he featured in two significant partnerships which helped Wanderers to amass 323 for four off their allotted 50 overs. Together with Guyanese Loknath Ramsuchit (29), they posted 80 for the first wicket and then partnered Brent Lezama (44) for a 104-run second wicket partnership. Former national senior allrounder Narine Bidhesi (35) continued to inspire his team as he and the inform Joel Pamphille (69 not out) plundered their opponents in a 80-run fourth wicket partnership.
Perkins, who was voted the Trincity Cricket League’s “Most Promising Player” in 2002 and copped the Brij Parasnath Trophy, had migrated to the United States with his parents and declined selection on the TT national Under-19 team last year. He returned home with a USA Development team and was offered a chance to advance his career with the former national Division One champion club.
Bidhesi revealed that the youngster was frustrated in not being able to play cricket regularly in the United States and on consultation with his father, young Perkins grabbed the opportunity of playing locally while studying online. He is a promising young cricketer and easily won the “Man-of- the-Match” award for his match-winning innings, as Green Arrow Sports were skittled out for 97 in 28 overs. Sanjeev Gooljar captured four wickets for 20 while Azfal Dean, Atiba Allert and Bidesh Maraj took two wickets each for 2, 28 and 31 respectively.
In another Group “B” match, FCB Clarke Road bounced back from their shocking defeat to Wanderers on Saturday and edged out frontrunner PowerGen Sports by 30 runs in the “Penal Derby” at Syne Village. Former national Under-19 captain Alon Mahabir (45 and 3 for 20) and national youth teammate Sean Siloch with a topscore of 95 which was studded with eight blistering fours were the architects for Clarke Road’s triumph. The Wilson Road boys tallied 197 for 7 off 50 overs while PowerGen in their push to beat the threatening rains folded for 164. Sherwin Ganga continued his impressive form and topscored with 48 while Rajkumar Mahadeo got 38 for the “Power Boys”. Former national spinners Mukesh Persad (three for 29) and David Sultan (two for 31) along with Mahabir did the damage.
Tile It Central Sports took full advantage of the rain-affected match against Queen’s Park Cricket Club and romped to a convincing ten-wicket victory. The Parkites made 159 for nine off 50 overs with Clevan Williams 54 and Deepak Kumar 24 not out being the main run-getters. The wickets were shared by Kyron Lynch (3 for 27), Ancil Bhaggan (2 for 19) and Narendra Bridgelal (2 for 19). Faced with a reduced target of 81 runs in 25 overs, former West Indies “B” team opener Satish Naidoo blazed seven fours as he raced to an unbeaten 47 and together with Deonath Baksh (15), they reached 81 without loss in 13.1 overs. Alescon Comets registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Las Lomas Sports in their Group “A” match. Legspinner Dinanath Ramnarine snapped up four wickets for 23 runs while Anthony George got two for 28 to restrict their opponents to 137 in 35.5 overs.
Former national players Rajendra Mangalie (31 not out) and Junior Sadoo (24) rallied Comet to 95 for three off 19.5 overs after they were set a reduced target of 95 in 36 overs. Ceramic MerryBoys defeated Moosai’s Sports on a faster run rate when rain stopped play. MerrysBoys compiled 235 for nine off 50 overs with Mario Belcon 59 and Denis Rampersad 53 the principal scorers. Moosai Sports reached 83 for three when play halted at the Diego Martin recreation ground. Defending champions Clico Preysal secured an easy eight-wicket victory over Mayo Valley Boys in their Group “B” match at the Inshan Ali Park, Preysal. Alvarado Bryce (47 not out) and Mark Ramprakash (18 not out) rattled up the revised target of 116 for two in 21 overs. Mayo Valley made 187 all out in 49.4 overs while Preysal lost just two wickets as they celebrated their second consecutive victory in two days with ten overs to spare, having to make 116 in 31 overs.
