Morvant/Laventille b-ballers stamp out new Basilon girls
Morvant/Laventille Secondary School’s Open Division girls team stamped out the challenge of NGC/Express Schools Basketball League (SBA) newcomers Basilon Street Youths beating them 38-10 at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo on Monday. The victory came after the M/L Under-20 Boys team beat defending champions Tranquillity Government 63-50 last Friday. Playing their first match in the schools league, Basilon Street received a baptism of fire from the unbeaten North Zone veterans. Morvant/Laventille went into the half 26-5 leaders and allowed only two baskets in the second half to make sure they kept their winning streak going.
Sharp-shooter Renecha Delecia put in 14 points and Candice La Borde was two behind as she ended on 12 for Morvant/Laventille. The silver lining in the cloud over Basilon Street came in the person of Asheera Asing who put in a combative eight points. The earlier match pitted last year’s Open Division champions Malick Secondary against consistent under-achievers Holy Name who to their credit have been showing signs of progress this season. Malick however were not be interested in anything but their first win in their first match of the season and took a 24-5 victory at the final whistle. Malick’s star on the day was Niasha Reyes, who also laces up for the national Under-19 and senior women’s teams. She returned a team high 10 points, while Simone Lescott was the only Holy Name scorer with five.
