Afong: Concept of mas under threat
Head of the National Carnival Bandleaders’ Association, Richard Afong, has criticised the proliferation of franchising in bands and accused certain bands of trying to do damage to others. Afong thinks that practice of bands “giving out” many sections to outsiders will have a negative impact on other bands “in terms of membership.”
He said there are no limits and he knew of a band which has 34-35 “outside” sections. In a telephone interview with Newsday, Afong said the practice is now obviously out of control and claimed it was a deliberate attempt by some “to do damage to others.” He did not call any names. Asked if bands allowing outsiders to design costumes would result in a diluting of the theme, Afong said some bands (he did not identify any by name) have been importing entire costumes.
The result he said is that there is repetition “in terms of concept.” Afong said the integrity of the concept of mas is being threatened. Giving out sections “appears to be giving opportunity, but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” Afong said TT is a democratic society, but the association is looking at this practice to see what impact it has on quality and creativity. He said the NCBA will be paying close attention this year to those bands which have franchised several sections.
