Mahase leads TT Davis Cup team
DEXTER MAHASE is the lone experienced member of the Trinidad and Tobago team selected for the 2004 Davis Cup Group III American Zone. The event will be staged in Honduras from February 2-8. Completing the team, whose ages range from 19 to 28, will be Jonathan Gomez, Richard Browne and Janielle Danclair while Lennox Francis will serve as captain/coach and Ashton Wharwood manager. Mahase was a member of the national team, featuring brothers Shane and Troy Stone and Ivor Grazette who participated in last year’s tie against Honduras at the Jean Pierre Sporting Complex, Mucurapo. And the left-hander is currently in his freshman year at Shorter College, Atlanta where he is preparing for the forthcoming event.
Another American-based smasher is Gomez, who played unbeaten during the trials at Tacarigua in December. He has spent three weeks in Florida fine-tuning his skills with coach Bill Adams. Browne is enrolled at Northwood University, Florida while Danclair, the lone home-based player, is working with Francis. The squad will assemble in Miami on Sunday and arrive in the Central American country on Monday, with competition starting next Wednesday February 4. And, in related news, the Tennis Association of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) will be holding their Annual General Meeting at Olympic House, Woodbrook on Sunday from 10 am.
