Song Of Freedom, Bandinthong stay home

SONG OF FREEDOM and Bandinthong for which first subscriptions were paid to race in the Sandy Lane Spa Sprint at the Garrison Savannah, Bridgetown, Barbados, on March 7, are down to clash tomorrow. Connections of both speed merchants have decided against sending their runners for the Sandy Lane event, a supporting race on Gold Cup Day, and have instead pencilled in their charges in the Starter Allowance feature on the Arima Race Club Day Three card at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. Bandinthong opted out the Bajan race after being allotted 60.5 kilos (133 pounds) in the dash, but only 47.5 kilos for tomorrow’s 1000-metres engagement on the turf at Santa Rosa, while trainer Grant Lourenco advised connections not to send over Song Of Freedom because the colt is a poor traveller.  He will tote 51.5 kilos in tomorrow’s run.

Attracted to the event and set to throw down a challenge to this duo is Smart And Lucky. This American-bred three-year-old who created a favourable impression with a record breaking performance in his first start last term will compete with 42.5 kilos in his saddlebag in the nine-horse race in which Solid Gold heads the handicap with 56.5 kilos. The Restricted Handicap which attracted eight runners on Monday, was scrapped at the declaration stage on Wednesday, following the withdrawal of  two runners. A total of 90 runners have taken entry to the day’s nine-race programme,  with the smallest field being six horses and the largest 16.
