Army atop All Sectors n-ball
CHAMPIONS Defence Force joined Police at the top of the Championship Division of the All Sectors Netball League when they whipped the Policewomen 42-39 at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua.
The lead fluctuated throughout Saturday’s match which produced exciting netball. The Army-Coast Guard women led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Police outscored them 13-9 to lead 23-10 at the half-time interval. The Policewomen were still ahead at the end of the three-quarter stage 32-39, but were conquered by Defence Force who put up an iron-clad defence in the final stanza, scoring 13 points and holding their rivals to just seven. Diana Pierre scored 25 points from 36 attempts and Lystra “Twinkletoes” Zamore had 17 of 19 attempts for the Army-Coast Guard women. Donna Charles got 32 points from 41 attempts, Allison Matthews four of six and Beverly Hernandez three of 11 for Police.
In the other match, Fire downed inconsistent Caribbean Facilities Company Limited (CFC) 61-43, with Simone Morgan showing great accuracy scoring 32 points from 38 attempts and Merlicia Lovell, 29 of 42 for the winners. National goal-shoot Janelle Barker netted 25 points from 25 attempts and Racquel Russell 20 of 31 for CFC. Fire led throughout the match 17-11; 32-22 and 45-29 at the quarter stages.
In Alternative Division Y action, TSTT and Government Printery played to a thrill-packed 33-33 draw. Sarah Hutchison scored 28 points, Junila Wilson three and Leslie Ann Legerton two for the “Hello Girls”, while Margaret Jack got 22, Joycelyn Marcelle eight and Candy Hazelwood three for Printery.
