Craigwell here for Akiel’s Inquest

WITNESS Trevor Craigwell is in Trinidad and will testify at the Akiel Chambers Inquest tomorrow morning.

This was confirmed yesterday by his attorney Fulton Wilson, when contacted by Newsday. Craigwell arrived from Connecticut, United States, a few days ago and will attend the hearing before Coroner Sherman McNicolls in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court. Craigwell was the owner of Craigie’s Fashion Store in Port-of-Spain before he mi-grated to the United States. McNicolls had stated in December that he was un-willing to close the inquest until the court had the opportunity to hear from Craigwell and his son Anthony, who are living in the United States.

McNicolls is presiding over the inquest at the Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrates’ Court to determine how 11-year-old Akiel Chambers died. Akiel, a student of Black-man’s Private School, Mara-val, was discovered floating in the pool of businessman Charles James at 23 Balata Terrace, Haleland Park, Ma-raval, on May 24, 1998. Akiel had gone to a birthday party for James’ daughter Carrie the day before when he went missing.

Craigwell, his son Anthony and the investigator PC Clive Alvarez are the only witnesses still to testify at the inquest. Craigwell and his children had attended the birthday party at Haleland Park, Maraval, according to the testimony of several witnesses at the inquest. Desmond Allum SC, Dr Kenneth O’Brien and Donna Prowell are seeking the interest of the Chambers family, while Sgt Kenneth Cordner is the court prosecutor.
