Aussie cyclist wins 30-lap grind
VISITING Australian rider Darren Reid was an impressive winner in the 30-lap main event of the Rotating Equipment/Malta Carib Cycling Series on the St Clair Avenue, Port-of-Spain circuit. The Aussie cyclist sped away from a four-rider bunch in Sunday’s event with half lap to race, and this move proved decisive. He was followed home by Chris Gill, Shannon Metivier and Colin Wilson in that order. But Josh Alexander paid the price for his over-exuberance when he rode off course turning into Elizabeth Street from Tragarete Road and failed to rejoin the race.
There was another incident during the one-lap sprint which was won by Adam Alexander. With the sharp Roxy Round a bout looming, Michael Phillips sped up the inside of the front bunch, but this proved to be the wrong tactic. The rider went flying as if to place an order at nearby Pizza Hut, mounting the roundabout and taking with him Colin Walcott and Jason Gooding, watched by startled motorists who were stopped by race officials. Elisha Greene kept on to be second with Shannon Metevier coming third. Phillips, despite his escapades, battled back to grab fourth.
