Man drops dead at police headquarters

A 56-year-old man who went to the Police Administration building to conduct business collapsed at around 9 am yesterday. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by EHS officers, but was pronounced dead at the hospital at around 9.25 am. Reports revealed that Cara Suites Hotel employee Roger Marshall went to police headquarters, and was forced to walk up the stairs to the fourth floor because the elevator was not working at the time. On reaching the fourth floor, Marshall began gasping for breath and police officers rushed to his assistance. EHS officers were summoned and were forced to climb four flight of steps to get to Marshall. By the time he was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, he was already dead.

Police officers told Newsday that shortly after the man died, workmen arrived on the scene and the elevator became operational just before midday. Officers complained bitterly that the elevator usually works for a few days and then shuts down. Even Police Commissioner Everald Snaggs and other executive officers walk all the way to the sixth floor when the elevator is not working. “We are fed up with the situation, and we are calling on the Ministry of National Security to address the matter now,” said angry police officers.
