‘BIG SONGS’ IN JUNIOR MONARCH

“BIG TUNE!  BIG TUNE!”  Such were the repeated shouts of patrons who attended the Sunshine Snack National Junior Calypso Monarch semi-finals yesterday afternoon at the Strand Cinema, Port-of-Spain. Thirty young semi-finalists all vied to secure a spot in the finals of the competition.  Song for song.

These youngsters performed their selections as though they were on the Savannah stage.  They tackled topics of a wide range from ‘Steelpan’, ‘Finger Pointing’ and ‘Choices’ to ‘Double Standards’ and ‘Daddy’s Horn’.  Contestants who came from schools that have recently been headlining the news were encouraged by resounding applause from audience members as they tried to make a point that many times only the ills are highlighted.  All contestant  ranged from age 7 to 19.
