Disappointing start to Chaguanas carnival
CARNIVAL in Chaguanas was launched on Friday afternoon with a ready-made shopping crowd taking in proceedings, but the advertised show on a budget of $8,300 was somewhat disappointing. On-lookers waited after 5 pm to get a glimpse of the original Jab Jabs from Perseverance Village, Couva, some Blue and Red Devils, three bats, and a handful of gorrilas parading the streets but the Moko Jumbies, Red Indians, Sailors, Clowns, and Dame Lorraines failed to turn up.
Even Mayor Dr Suruj Rambachan and his deputy, Orlando Nagessar, expressed the thought “that last year was much better but, be that as it may, however, we have overcome some major hurdles and things would be brighter now that the Borough had received its total grant from the National Carnival Commission for the 2004 Celebrations.” Chairman of the Chaguanas Carnival Committee, Alderman Naidu Powdhar, assured “those who did not receive their cash prizes last year will definitely be paid during the 2004 prize distribution function, as the NCC has honoured what we are owing and we have received that amount by cheque earlier in the week.”
