New female prison queen crowned
Theresa Matthews was crowned the new Calypso Queen at the Women’s Prison at Golden Grove on Friday evening before a large audience of inmates and special guests which included Singing Sandra, Calypso Rose, Impulse and senior prison officials led by Commissioner Leo Abraham.
The new queen sang her way past 12 other contestants including two foreign competitors with a song about prison life titled “Life in Jail.” Matthew’s rendition also earned her prizes in two other categories, “Best Prison Song” and “People’s Choice.” Second was Rohini Jones who sang “Loosing Game” and third was Anita Bisnath, a Guyanese who sang “Sawaleeyai” to an infectious Chutney beat. Bisnath also earned the prize for the “Best Chutney Song,” at the competition.
