Cremation and funeral postponed
The funeral service and cremation of a 51-year-old woman who died at a Felicity nursing home on Sunday was postponed yesterday after officers of the Chaguanas CID seized the body from Dass Funeral Home.
Reports revealed that relatives of the woman, Routie Bishunath, were not satisfied with the cause of death and took their suspicions to Ag Sgt Ajith Persad of the Chaguanas CID. A party of officers went to Dass Funeral Home on Sunday night where they seized the body. It was taken to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy will be carried out today to determine the cause of death. Bishunath, of Esmeralda Road, Cunupia, was allegedly the victim of domestic violence on May 25 last year.
She was treated at hospital for four months and then moved to a nursing home in Central. The mother of seven was last being treated at the La Vida Nursing home in Felicity. On Sunday, around 10 am, Bishunath died at the nursing home. Her body was removed to Dass Funeral Home, Chaguanas, and the cremation was scheduled for Monday. The Claxton Bay relatives of the woman were not satisfied with the cause of death listed on the death certificate issued by a doctor at the nursing home.
A party of officers led by Inspector Burt Raphael, Ag Sgt Ajith Persad and including Cpl Salick, Viorreul, and PC James carried out investigations and interviewed several persons. Investigators are awaiting the outcome of the autopsy before proceeding with the matter. Relatives of the dead woman insisted yesterday that Routie was the victim of domestic violence and they feel that her death was as a result of the injuries sustained from beatings.
