ANOTHER DRAG DEATH IN TOBAGO
The “death sport” of drag racing has claimed yet another young life on the island, when last Friday, Andy Caruth, 22, of Douglas, Trace Hope, Tobago, succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicular accident on the Claude Noel Highway the previous night. Caruth was the third young Tobagonian to have died as a result of the “death sport” for the year. Keron Smith, 21, of Patience Hill and Lincoln Graham, 31, of Mason Hall lost their lives on Friday January 9 when the Nissan Sunny motor car driven by Graham collided with a two-door Mazda sports car on the Claude Noel Highway.
According to police reports, around 11.30 pm on Thursday night, Caruth was said to be racing with another man in the vicinity of the Dwight Yorke Stadium at Bacolet and was attempting to make a 360 degrees turn when his Nissan B14 Sentra was broadsided by the other vehicle, a Nissan Sunny, that was trailing closely. Police, paramedics of the Emergency Health Services (EHS) and Fire Services arrived shortly after and had to extricate Caruth from his vehicle. Both drivers were taken to the Scarborough Regional Hospital, however, Caruth was flown to the Port-Of-Spain General Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The 19-year-old driver of the other car was treated for minor injuries and discharged. A post mortem revealed that Caruth died from head and chest injuries as a result of the impact of the collision. Cpl Henry and Const Campbell of the Scarborough Traffic Branch are continuing investigations.
