Atlantic LNG workers march in Pt Fortin

Under a scorching afternoon sun, scores of protesting workers at Atlantic LNG’s train IV plant staged a peaceful march through the streets of Point Fortin, yesterday.

And, under the watchful eyes of a handful of police officers, the marchers, chanting “this is we train four train,” and “no more ride for them on this train four train,” were joined by spouses and children as the march slowly winded it’s way through the southern borough. Earlier, president of the protesting workers, Ernest Thompson, described the march as an “historic moment” in the struggle for improved wages and salaries in the heavy construction sector.

“I want you to feel good in your spirit,” he said, adding that the march was also “for the benefit of our children who would someday take our places in building our country.” “You must have one mind, and one aim. And that is no more will workers be exploited in this country,” he said, to loud cheers from the rows of helmeted workers. The march concluded with a mass rally at Chin Kit Park.
