Work stops at ALNG Train III
The shutting down of entire operations at the Atlantic LNG is under threat, as workers of the Atlantic LNG Train III have now downed tools. Newsday understands that around 3 pm on Saturday, the plant’s operations came to a halt as protesting dock workers refused to load natural gas into tankers.
The workers claimed that they are being underpaid, overworked and exploited by their employers. President of OWTU, Trinmar Branch, Ancil Roget said that the reason for the shut down was that the Train remained filled to capacity, adding to which, he said “the remaining Trains I and II, have just a few hours again, before they too reach to their full capacity. Roget said that once this happens the entire ALNG processing plant will have to shut down. “The workers, who are responsible for towing those tankers in and out of the ALNG operations in Point Fortin are being exploited and that has been continuing for far too long” Roget said. “The issue had been raised with the management of Flipwise Contractors sometime on Thursday, and then again on Friday, after raising it sometime in the past, all 16 workers employed with the contracting firm, got no where with that. the firm said that it was not prepared to discuss wage increases” he added.
