TTPost 4 test positive for TB
Four workers at TTPost have been sent for chest x-rays after initial tests were positive for exposure to Tuberculosis. But this does not mean their health is at risk, said acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Rohit Doon. In an interview with Newsday last Thursday, Dr Doon said Tuberclin tests had been done on 27 persons and the results came back on 19 cases. He said it takes two to three days after the injection is administered for signs of positive exposure to become evident. Dr Doon said four of the 19 persons were moved to the second stage of testing — chest x-rays. “When this is done it will show evidence of more than exposure.” If changes are seen in the x-rays, workers will be put on treatment. Dr Doon said the situation at TTPost was “well in control” and the workers being tested did not pose a risk to anyone. Over the past two years, the incidence of TB has been declining, he said.
Two weeks ago, TTPost received a medical report that one of its employees in the mail sorting room had been diagnosed with TB and admitted to the hospital. Health officials from the Caura Chest Unit were called in to advise the company on how to deal with the situation. TTPost subsequently issued a media release assuring the public that management had implemented all the advice provided by medical specialists and continued to monitor the situation closely to minimise the risk to staff.
