Panday and Ramesh for New York seminar
Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday and National Team Unity Leader Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj will make presentations at a Human Rights conference in New York, according to a release. Both men are also expected to be at the welcoming dinner on Friday evening. The all day conference on “Human Rights Perspectives and the Indian Experience” will be held at St John University in Jamaica, Queens on March 20. The conference will focus on human rights of people of Indian origin in countries with significant number of Indians in the Caribbean, Americas, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Mr Maharaj will present a paper on “Rights abuses, threat to democracy, good governance and a vision for a better Trinidad and Tobago.” Mr Panday’s paper has not been confirmed yet. Based on the theme of “Human Rights Experiences,” the conference brings to focus the nature and elements of human rights abuses as they affect Indians living outside of India. They will examine the causal nature, extent and consequences of such abuses and to address some of the underlying issues related to these, the release stated.
