Man charged with shooting cop
AN EAST Dry River man charged with attempting to murder a police officer yesterday appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate to answer the charge. He was also jointly charged with another man for 11 other offences. Nazim Christian, 23, of McKee Street, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain and Kerwin Phillip, 26, of Charford Court in Port-of-Spain, appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court. Christian was charged with attempting to murder PC Bean Davidson of the St James Police Station on March 9. Davidson, 43, had been shot in the face at point blank range subsequent to responding to a report of a robbery at Ambassador Photo Studio on Western Main Road, St James.
A bleeding Davidson was rushed to the Cocorite Seventh Day Adventist Hospital and later transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for surgery. Armed robbery and possession of arms and ammunition were among the 11 joint charges faced by Christian and Phillip. The charges were laid by Sgt Nandram Moonilal of the St James CID. The men were represented by attorneys Wayne Sturge and Patrick Godson-Phillips and will re-appear in court today.
