‘How did my son die?’
THE FATHER of one of three robbery suspects gunned down on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near the Trincity Mall last Friday, is demanding answers from the police about the circumstances leading to his son’s death. Martin Sargeant, father of Shawn Sargeant, also wants certain items belonging to his late son to be returned. “I was not aware of the life my son led since he does not stay with me,” Sargeant admitted. “He has been dead since Friday and no one, not one officer, has had the courtesy to visit my home or say anything to me and when I tried to collect my son’s belongings all I get is a runaround.”
“After learning of his death, I went to the Arouca Police Station on Saturday where I was told by ASP Worrel to come at 9 am on Monday to the Forensic Sciences Centre and bring his passport to collect the items. I waited there until 2 pm and when the officer came all he told me he was busy. “I went back to the station but all I have been getting is the runaround and being constantly told to come back. I am not trying to embarrass anyone nor am I vex, all I want are answers and his things.” Sargeant said when he saw his son’s body it was minus the jewelry he always wore, his sneakers, his glasses and pair of pants.
“Now all I want is to bury my son with some dignity on Saturday with these things at his side,” he said. The funeral service will take place at the Tunapuna RC Church followed by burial at the Tunapuna Public Cemetery. Shawn, 24, lived with his brother at Lackpat Street, Tunapuna. His mother lives in New York. Several efforts to contact ASP Worrel were futile and officers at the Arouca Police Station refused to comment on the matter.
