$2M worth of ganja, arms, hand grenade seized

A 47-year-old father, his 41-year-old wife, 17-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son were arrested after police found $2M in compressed marijuana ready for transhipment, two pump action Mossberg Shotguns, 26 rounds of ammunition and one live hand grenade at their Kalicharan Avenue, Subero Street, Malabar Housing Scheme home on Friday night. Their 11-year-old son who also lived on the premises was earlier released. According to information, after two weeks of surveillance, officers of the Malabar Police Post CID armed with a search warrant around 7 pm raided the house where they found the drugs, arms and ammunition in a bedroom on the northern side where they arrested the family.

The team, headed by Cpl Riley included Cpl Le Blanc, constables Harewood, Gangadeen, Bernard, Madeira, Jagroo, Samaroo and Mahabir. Visiting the station were Snr Supt Bastien, Insps Bullen and Hansraj, Sgts Garrick and Lewis, along with members of the Firearm Interdiction Unit. Police believe the drugs and arms which were all packaged for transhipment by sea came in from another country and were to be moved over the weekend. Snr Supt Bastien highly commended the officers for their initiative and seizure of the drugs and arms. So far six guns and over $2.5M in drugs have been seized in the Northern Division over the last week. In an unrelated matter earlier on Friday morning, St Joseph police arrested a father, wife and three sons with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and 8 rounds of ammunition at their St Joseph home. Both families are to appear before respective magistrates in their divisions on Monday.
