Girl in court for Frederick Street killing

A Laventille teenager, charged with the murder of Super 10 Store employee Lennard Jack, yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court. Jack, 19, of Wharton Street, Laventille was stabbed in the neck on Thursday and died shortly after his arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. The offence allegedly occurred on the store’s Frederick Street compound. The indictable charge was laid by Sgt Andre Lynch of the Port-of-Spain Homicide Bureau of Investigation. As the young lady was ushered into the prisoner’s dock, the court room benches reserved for members of the public suddenly filled with her family, relatives and friends, who came to lend their support.

Her attorney Nathaniel King expressed his desire to get the prosecution to speed up the inquiry and was informed by police prosecutor Sgt Claudette Bynoe that everything would be put in place to begin within the next three weeks. Meanwhile, she added, disclosure of all documents relevant to the case would get started immediately. King also requested of  McNicolls that the teen be allowed to speak with her mother with reference to obtaining personal necessities for her unexpected stay away from home. The magistrate denied the request on the advice of Bynoe, who suggested that the youth’s mother should liaise with the “police officers downstairs.” The teenager was remanded at the State prison for women and will re-appear in court on March 29.
