Sugar company sends 12,000 tonnes to Europe
THE first quota of sugar for the European Union (EU)/Cotonou Protocol of 48,000 tonnes was exported to the United Kingdom on Sunday.
Chairman of the Sugar Manufacturing Company Limited (SMCL) Prem Nandlal said the shipment of 12,000 tonnes of raw sugar, which was to be transported to the Tate and Lyle refinery in Thames, England, was successfully concluded despite recent protest action. “Another shipment is due to leave in three weeks time and already there is approximately 6,000 tonnes of sugar already in place at the SMCL Point Lisas Warehouse for this second shipment,” Nandlal added. On the question of a replacement for SMCL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Clarence Rambarat, who recently resigned, Nandlal said the company was re-advertising the position. Rambarat is due to leave office on March 31.
