UNC not interested in Achong

THE OPPOSITION UNC said it has no interest in wooing PNM Point Fortin MP Larry Achong and does not have any plans to move a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Patrick Manning. This was the word from UNC chairman Wade Mark who dismissed recent newspaper reports that such initiatives were in the pipeline. “There is no truth to that. That is an internal bacchanal,” Mark told Newsday. The UNC chairman said the party was not about to waste its time on what is clearly an internal PNM matter when there are more serious issues facing Trinidad and Tobago. Mark said the UNC maintains that the Government’s collapse is inevitable and it is “prepared to catch that ball” when the time comes.

He added that the UNC is quietly preparing for its internal elections in July and is mobilising ground troops in all constituencies across TT. Party sources said emphasis is being placed on the marginal constituencies of San Fernando West, Ortoire/Mayaro, Tunapuna, St Joseph and Barataria/San Juan. The UNC will hold its National Assembly at Rienzi Complex, Couva, on Sunday at which 15 amendments to the party’s constitution will be discussed. Among those changes will be the election of three deputy political leaders. Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday is currently in New York and is scheduled to return home either tomorrow or Thursday.
