Dad of six guilty of sexual indecency on girl, 9
A FATHER of six wept yesterday after he was found guilty by a jury in the San Fernando High Court of committing a sexual offence against a nine-year-old relative. Taxi-driver Gregory Gordon will be sentenced tomorrow by Justice Melville Baird in the First Criminal Court. Shortly after noon yesterday, following a two-hour deliberation the nine-member mixed jury returned to the courtroom with their guilty verdict on three counts of the sexual offence.
Gordon’s attorney, Rupert Frank, asked Justice Baird in mitigation to temper justice with mercy. “This is a very serious and a very sad case. I can safely say there will be no winners (in this matter),” Frank said. Gordon, a first-time offender, was initially charged with seven counts of the sexual offence, but yesterday Justice Baird directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict on four of them. According to the State’s case, led by Senior State attorney Roger Gaspard, the sexual offences were committed between January 30, 1993, and March 1, 2000. They occurred at Gordon’s San Fernando home. Charges were laid by WPC McDowell of the San Fernando CID.
