Security at police stations beefed-up
SECURITY measures have been quietly strengthened at the nation’s police stations after three police stations in Southern Division were the target of anonymous callers threatening to blow up the buildings with hand grenades. The telephone threats to the San Fernando, Marabella and Mon Repos Police Stations were confirmed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of South, Dennis Graham, who said while they had not put officers on “full alert,” they advised that “extreme caution” was being exercised. Acknowledging the calls could very well be pranks, ACP Graham said it was prudent of the Police Service not to take any chances and they were taking whatever steps necessary to deter such action.
During the past week several calls were made to San Fernando CID, Marabella Police Station and most recently the Mon Repos Police Station. Police sources said they were successful in having the calls traced and investigations were moving at “full pace.” Admitting that it may be an inconvenience to the public, ACP Graham said barricades would be set up in front of the stations at specific times as part of the security measures. Earlier this week, the road in front of the San Fernando CID was blocked off, but barricades were later removed after several complaints by businessmen and other members of the public.
