‘Parasite’ jailed for theft from granny

A TOBAGO mechanic who stole $150 from his 76-year-old grandmother, was deemed a parasite and jailed for six months with hard labour by Scarborough Magistrate Annette McKenzie on Monday. Before passing sentence on Samuel Henry, 21, of Easterfield Trace, Mason Hall, the Magistrate  told him: “I can’t understand in the first instance why you would want to steal from your grandmother. You should be giving her more than $150. You are no more than a pest or a parasite to be stealing from your grandmother.

“Instead of helping her, you break into her home and steal her money!” Henry was charged by PC Dean Cipriani, of the Scarborough CID. The court heard that May Henry went out around 1.45 pm on March 25, leaving her front-door key in a flowerpot on the porch. About 30 minutes later, her granddaughter who lives with her came home to find Henry, who lived next door, coming out of the house. She confronted him, enquiring how he had gained entry to the house.

Henry took the key from his pocket and returned it to the flowerpot, then walked off, telling her: “I did come for some sugar.” When Henry’s grandmother returned later that day, she discovered the cash missing. Henry told the court he was owing a man $900 for a cell phone, and had been threatened that he would be beaten if he did not pay.
