Palm Sunday preacher says crime like slavery

THE DUTY of the church as an ambassador of Christ is to seek justice on behalf of all. That was the message from the Reverend Jeremy Francis of the Moravian church yesterday in a short speech on crime and justice, prior to the start of a Palm Sunday procession by churches in Port-of-Spain. The procession started outside the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception on Independence Square. Reverend Francis told the congregation that crime could be described as a system of slavery. He noted, however, that God is able to solve everything.

He also reminded those present that they could not be unrighteous and unjust and begged that they cry and speak out for justice. He said regardless of who did wrong, whether it was the police or the poor, there must be a cry for justice since “all of us must seek it.” Short messages on different social themes were delivered at intervals along the procession route. There was only a small turn out of worshippers for the start of the annual Palm Sunday observance, but more were expected to join along the way. The procession left the Cathedral just before 3 pm proceeding along George Street to the Moravian Church on Laventille Road. Other stops were at the Salvation Army, St John Baptist Church and Greyfriars Church, ending at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The Cadet band accompanied the procession. Yesterday’s observance came at the start of Holy Week. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
