Cheque fraud deportee held by cops in Princes Town

PRINCES TOWN police believe they were able to avert a possible cheque scam with the apprehension of a man who was deported from the United States for cheque fraud. The 26-year-old man was held on Thursday night in possession of several printed cheques which police have deemed fraudulent.

Reports said that around 9 pm PCs Burton, Richardson, and Ribero, were conducting a routine patrol through the area when they saw three men walking very briskly on the road. Acting on suspicion, the police team approached the men and searched them. The deportee was allegedly found in possession of a Baretta, a semi-automatic firearm, loaded with eight rounds, and the fraudulent cheques.

The three men were taken to the Princes Town Police Station for further questioning. The US deportee is expected to be charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, and is due to appear before a magistrate on Tuesday.
