TYC condemns violations at UWI
THE TRINIDAD Youth Council (TYC) last week expressed the view that in any democratic system, transparency should be considered at all times, but that politics was something which would continuously affect this process. Claiming that we need to uphold “what is implied as correct to the benefit of the majority of people,” the TYC is seeking to encourage young politicians to “aspire to the loftiness of proper conduct, and not let themselves be dragged into the decrepit practices of mainstream partisan politics.” Based on these facts, the TYC condemned the apparent constitutional violations which shrouded last week’s electoral process of the UWI’s Guild of Students.
In a release, the organisation claimed that it had received reliable information which indicated that the violations included double standards, unconstitutional practices and convenient appointments that inundated the elections. “In a time when the country is lobbying out politicians to become more accountable to the people, we cannot condone any activities of non-transparency and high-handedness especially on the part of the Guild of Students,” the release stated.
“These young people are some of our future leaders and if we are to break the vicious cycle of ‘muddy water politics’ that has plagued our country for generations, then it must start with our young politicians,” urged the TYC. Expressing full and complete support for “any action especially by the students to correct the flaws in their system,” the release condemned them for “being proactive in dealing with these problems in a direct manner.”
