‘Friends’ killing ‘friends’ on TT’s roads

MOTORISTS who send phone messages to their friends are endangering their life and the lives of other people as well. This was the grim warning issued yesterday by the non-governmental organisation, Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT).

In a statement, CBTT president Harrack Balramsingh said: “Some young drivers send text messages to boyfriends and girlfriends. Anyone who encourages a motorist to send these messages while driving is not a genuine friend. “There are far too many vehicles on our roads and for this reason, motorists must always be alert at all times. Drivers sending text messages from their cellular phones must take their eyes off the road to do so.”

Balramsingh called for regulations prohibiting this practice “which could result in further carnage on the nation’s roads.” He added that drivers must be forced to obey the traffic rules if road accidents are to decrease in TT. Balramsingh also called for “regular police patrols every day to ensure that our roads become safer” and the early implementation of the breathalyser.
