UNC MP’s office broken into
UNC Member of Parliament for Fyzabad, Chandresh Sharma, is calling on Government to declare the necessary provisions and security measures for the offices of Opposition members, in the wake of what Sharma claims is the sixth break-in at his constituency office yesterday. In a telephone interview with Newsday, Sharma said a number of confidential items, including diskettes and computer files containing valuable UNC information, were stolen during the latest break-in. Sharma said there seemed to be a pattern in which Opposition MPs’ offices were being broken into, and this had to stop.
“These break-ins and robberies are sending a clear signal to the public that they should not enter the respective offices of members of the Opposition to give any sort of information, whether it be on corruption or otherwise, because eventually the Government will get hold of it,” Sharma said. He added that the offices of UNC members Kelvin Ramnath, Robin Montano and Carol-Cuffy Dowlat had been broken into within recent times. “What does the Government intend to do about this disastrous situation? Is it going to continue and are we the members of the Opposition being taken for granted? Why is this happening?” Sharma asked.
He said his office, located on Fyzabad Main Road next to the Fyzabad Health Centre was secured around 5.30 pm on Wednesday but on arrival at work yesterday around 7.45 am, two members of staff discovered the office had been broken into and confidential items missing. Sharma said he could not state exactly what had been stolen since police had asked that no one interfere with the crime scene until fingerprint experts arrived. Up to late yesterday, no arrests had been made and Fyzabad police are continuing investigations.
