Four Trini artists get NY awards
Artist-poet Leroy Clarke has been invited to receive the Citation of Merit at an awards banquet to be held in New York today. Other local artists slated to receive awards are playwright/actor Earl Lovelace, Freddie Kissoon and Cheryl Byron (posthumously.) The Trinidad and Tobago Folk Arts Institute in New York is responsible for Clarke receiving the award.
The institute was founded in 1991 as a research-minded think-tank, focused on serious engagement of the indigenous Folk Arts of Trinidad and Tobago. The Citation of Merit has previously been awarded to other distinguished individuals such as Beryl Mc Burnie, Dr JD Elder, Aldwyn Roberts (Lord Kitchener), Bob Gittens, Ellie Mannette, Stephen Lee Heung, Winston Bailey (Shadow), Winsford des Vignes, Julia Edwards and Joey Lewis. Studio 66 Art Support Community congratulates its formidable activist within the organisation, and promoter of art and art development programmes throughout the nation.
