Mentally ill man stabbed to death

A MENTALLY ILL man was beaten and stabbed to death after he attacked a group of men with a piece of wood and stoned his relatives’ Penal home on Saturday. Police have since detained two brothers ages 19 and 24, and were up to late yesterday questioning the young men, who were recently deported from the United States.

Thirty-two-year-old Vishnu Singh, an outpatient of the St Ann’s Hospital, lived alone in one of his father’s houses  at Rochard Road in Penal. Eyewitnesses told police around 4 pm, Singh attacked a group of young men, including the two suspects, with a piece of wood while they were standing outside their home. Singh also started pelting his relatives’ home with stones and bottles. The two suspects reportedly ran into the house and returned with a knife and piece of wood. They chased after Singh and eventually caught up with him a short distance away in Singh’s yard. The mentally disturbed man was allegedly beaten and stabbed three times about his body. He died on the spot.

Singh’s sister, Seeta Bissessar, 42, told Newsday her brother would become violent whenever he “tripped.” She said her son, Randy Ramnath, tried to intervene and was cut on his two fingers. An autopsy is expected to be performed today at the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park, St James. Penal police are continuing investigations.
