Cattle farm gutted by fire

AN EARLY morning fire yesterday completely destroyed a farm house at Carlsen Field, Chaguanas, which police said was valued at $60,000. Cattle farmer Richard Ford, 33, told police around 6.30 am, he awoke from sleep and placed a pot of water on a stove in the kitchen to prepare a meal for calves at Farm no 1, Carlsen Field, Chaguanas. On putting the water to boil, he went to the washroom situated at the back of the house and later smelt smoke.

Ford said he saw thick black smoke billowing from the kitchen and was helpless to prevent the flames from spreading. The structure which was owned by John Bonisace Leonard, who resides at Chase Village, Chaguanas, was destroyed along with two water pumps, worth $25,000. Ford said a herd of 20 cattle and ten calves escaped the inferno. Chaguanas police and fire officials visited the scene and are continuing investigations.
