Squatters’ matter against NHA adjourned
The application by squatters of Union Hall and Duncan Village, San Fernando, seeking leave of the court to challenge the National Housing Authority’s (NHA) demolition of their houses, came up for hearing in the San Fernando Civil Court yesterday. It came up before Justice Nolan Bereaux in the First Court with attorney Garnet Mungalsingh representing the squatters’ interest.
On Monday afternoon, the squatters filed an application in the Sub-Registry of the San Fernando High Court seeking leave to apply for judicial review of last Thursday’s demolition exercise by NHA in Union Hall, New Development Settle-ment, Duncan Village, Cross Crossing, which saw the destruction of 50 houses and left over 100 persons homeless. In the application, the squatters are seeking leave to challenge the decision taken by the NHA “to enter upon and forcibly take possession of the lands and buildings in the settlement, and thereupon to break, demolish, and destroy the said buildings and contents therein.” The matter was adjourned for a date next week before another judge.
