Driver suffers broken leg as car hits pole and overturns

A driver heading east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway yesterday morning crashed into two light poles near the AS Bryden building, El Socorro. Varun Maharaj, 23, sustained a broken leg, while his cousin, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered only scratches. According to information Maharaj, of Gulf View, San Fernando was proceeding east around 1.30 am when he lost control and crashed into two light poles, one after the other before coming to a stop upside down in a nearby drain.

The Fire Services had to be called in to use “The Jaws of Life” to free Maharaj, while his cousin Marlon Jaipaulsingh, also of Gulf View, San Fernando escaped with minor bruises. Both men were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
