CJ’s son admitted to the Bar
Shiv Anand Sharma, son of Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma, was admitted to the legal Bar yesterday in a ceremony at the Port-of-Spain First Assizes. The admittance ceremony was presided over by the Chief Justice and included Justice Herbert Volney and Justice Paula Mae Weekes. Also admitted to the Bar was Sareta Ashraph, an English-trained human rights attorney who has worked with international organisations. Sharma’s petition was presented by Desmond Allum SC, while Ashraph’s was presented by Israel Khan SC. Both attorneys were congratulated by the three sitting judges and Justice Volney and Justice Weekes gave the young attorneys some advice. Justice Weekes advised them to be ethical, while Justice Volney echoed similar sentiments, but also recalled that Sharma came from a family of nobility with a long line of legal practitioners. Allum spoke of Sharma’s humanity despite the fact that he is the son of the Chief Justice.
