Man to stand trial for killing Rene Paul
THE MAN charged with the murder of 37-year-old “community leader” Rene Paul was yesterday committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Assizes. After hearing the evidence of 13 witnesses, Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against 30-year-old Sherwin Griffith. Griffith, of Buller Trace, Pashley Street in Laventille, was charged with the January 7 murder by Acting Insp John Martinez, who was then attached to the Besson Street CID.
It is alleged that on the day in question, Paul was shot while sitting in his car. The former Death Row inmate reportedly got out of the car and attempted to run but stumbled and died instantly after receiving several more shots. Griffith was represented by attorney Clyde Constantine. State attorney Nigel Pilgrim prosecuted.
