One son killed, another hurt in car crash

MOTHER’S Day celebrations at a Penal home turned to mourning when a mother lost one son, and another was injured in a car crash in La Romaine early yesterday morning. Bissoondaye James spent yesterday weeping for her youngest child 20-year-old, Anil. Another son, Anthony, 27, sustained deep cuts and bruises, and was treated and discharged from hospital.  Also injured in the two-car crash at South Trunk Road were Summer Chunesingh, 26, of San Fernando, Michael Sammy, 27, of Coconut Drive, and Tim Galai, of Penal. The accident occ-urred around 1.30 am when Anil and Anthony, both of Ramnarine Trace, San Francique, and their friend Galai, were in a rented vehicle, heading in a westerly direction along South Trunk Road. Anthony was the driver, Anil was the front seat passenger and Galai was seated in the back seat.

Police said when in the vicinity of Maska Limited, Anthony collided with a silver Honda Civic driven by Sammy which was travelling in the opposite direction. Anil was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Fernando General Hospital. Anthony spent most of the day in his bed, coming to grips with the loss of his brother with whom he had a close relationship. He said: “That happened so fast . . . in a split second. All I see was a bright light in front of me. I don’t even remember nothing when we hit. I freaked out and woke up in the hospital about 4 o’clock.”

When the family rushed to his bedside, they broke the news to him about his younger brother. Anthony’s father, Simon, said the family was celebrating the arrival of his daughter-in-law, Geeta, and three grandchildren from New York. They also had belated celebrations for Anthony’s birthday which was on Tuesday. “Anil played music for us whole evening and they were liming at home. I don’t know where they were going, but they said they were coming back just now.” Anil’s sister, Marilyn Ramjit, add-ed: “He was really nice and helpful to the family. I just can’t believe he is gone.” An autopsy is expected to be performed today at the San Fernando Mor-tuary.
