Man jailed for raping relative

A 51-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison for indecency and raping a child. The sentence was handed down by Justice Malcolm Holdip at the Port-of-Spain Fifth Assizes Criminal Court. Milton Pitt was charged with two counts of serious indecency and two counts of having sexual intercourse with the minor between June 1998 and August 1999.

The teenager was 10 and 11 years old at the time. He was sentenced to serve five years each for the indecency offences and ten years each for the rape offences. The sentences will run concurrently. In handing down his sentence, Holdip highlighted the serious nature of the offences and the long- term effects they would have on the victim.

Society viewed adults as protectors, the judge said, and the young girl’s confidence had been betrayed by the actions of the man. By threatening to kill her and members of her family if she told anyone that she was being sexually abused, Holdip said the convicted man had put fear in the victim’s mind and made her feel as though she had done something wrong. The teen’s mother was advised to take her for counselling.
