Serial rapist killed in Laventille
It is often said that “there is an unspoken respect among thieves and criminals,” which means that, apart from refraining from backstabbing your own associates or gang members, you do not interfere with their family, especially their womenfolk. This is something that serial rapist Hayden Worrel, aka Chuppy, found out the hard way. Worrel, 43, was executed at LP Picton Road in Laventille, a short distance from where he lived at around 12.15 yesterday evening. One bullet did the job — it went through his mouth and came out the back of his head. According to investigations, frustrated residents of the area formed a “vigilante group” after a woman was raped in the area about a week ago and Worrel was identified as the rapist.
The father of two came out of prison in 2002, after serving eight years for rape but was sent back to prison during the same year for robbery. He came out of prison earlier this year. Prior to that, he is suspected of a number of other rapes and robberies in the area. Recently, robberies and rapes in the area have escalated and frustrated residents, which consist of many of the gunmen and gang members of the area, sent warnings to Worrel about controlling his behaviour, but after the recent rape, they decided to stop him personally. Residents, however, claimed they have not seen him in the area for sometime.
When Newsday spoke to the mother of his two-year-old son, she quickly indicated that since getting pregnant, she broke of her relationship with Worrel because he spent all of his life robbing and raping people. The dead rapist has another daughter, Kadesha, 12, in the Beetham Estate. Residents claimed to have heard a single shot but did not investigate. Sometime later, another resident saw the body on her way home and alerted neighbours.
A police source told Newsday that a gang-member recently told him they were fed up of Worrel robbing and raping people, saying they will be “taking him out.” Senior police sources said he was a pest and they were happy to see him go. “He was a serial rapist who harassed anyone and, because of his muscular build, he feared no one.” Since Worrel’s release from prison, there have been many robberies and one rape in the area and police had several warrants for his arrest. Visiting the scene were Snr Supt Denoon, Mohammed, ASP Sealy, Inspector Hutchins, Ag Insp Singh, Cpl Fournilliar and Edwards. Cpl Fournilliar is investigating.
