Cops to ride with TTEC crew
Repair crews from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC) who fear for their safety when they are called out to do repair work in “high risk” crime areas will now be accompanied by police officers. This was the assurance given by Ag Commissioner Trevor Paul in response to the attack of a five-man crew at Basilon Street, East Dry River, Port-of -Spain, on Tuesday night. The five were held up at gunpoint, beaten and robbed of cash and valuables. According to the Commissioner, whenever the assistance is needed it will be provided. Repair crewmen from TTEC returned to Basilon Street yesterday and repaired the fallen electricity lines in the area. The lines came down after a tree collapsed causing an electricity outage in the area.
Hesitant workmen went to the area and carried out repairs, but police officers received reports that the fallen tree was maliciously cut down. TTEC has advised that “enhanced precautionary measures” will now be put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of its employees while they carry out duties under the mandate of the Commission’s stated mission. Residents of Basilon Street said yesterday that the persons responsible for the robbery on Tuesday night were outsiders. They added that Basilon Street is not a high crime area. They welcomed the assurance given by the Commissioner that police officers will assist crewmen when necessary. Besson Street police yesterday explained that on Tuesday night the number of police patrols were doubled to halt any crime increase during the power outage in the area.
