Tobago teachers join red protest
AS TEACHERS in Tobago joined their Trinidad counterpart by wearing red in protest over current wage negotiations, Tobago House of Assembly Chief Secretary Orville London said he was confident their students’ best interests would “win out.” London said he expected some “very interesting times over the next few weeks or months” as the negotiations continued and he was consoled by the fact that all industrial disputes had ended.
London, a former teacher, admitted he had not spoken to any of TTUTA’s representatives as he felt it was not yet necessary since the matter was still at the level of the Chief Personnel Officer and the union. He said early political intervention might only serve to “muddy the waters.” “I am not going to intervene because people will say that I am not doing anything. When I intervene and I hope I will not have to, it will be because I feel that I am going to have some kind of positive impact,” London said. He said he was optimistic that sooner rather than later the matter would be resolved.
